To counter the danger, the Government decided to protect part of the site, and in 1994 this protection was extended to encompass the entire dune and the adjoining forest. Today, more than 6800 hectares are classified under the May 2nd, 1930 natural sites and monuments law.
This classification is a strong national protection. The fact that the Pilat dune site is being preserved in its present state does not detract from its management or value.
