A monument in layers

Several layers of soil have been and gone to form the shape we see today.

The dune’s interior architecture is testament to this.

The dune’s history can be reconstructed thanks to the undulating alternate layers of sand and black levels on its ocean side.

These paleosols (the lowest being the oldest) correspond to the former position of forest soils and not to oil! Thanks to their components (tree stumps, pieces of ceramics, pottery fragments, etc.), scientists are able to study and date each level. The Pilat Dune is a remarkable geological phenomenon and a true "natural archive".
